STATEMENT: Best Buy supports proposed federal e-waste legislation to improve electronics recycling nationwide
-
MINNEAPOLIS, June 30 – Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE: BBY) has publicly stated support for H.R. 2396, the Electronic Device Recycling Research and Development Act, a bill recently introduced by U.S. Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Maryland) that seeks to improve the recycling of electronics across the U.S.
The proposed federal legislation is the latest step in bringing together manufacturers, retailers, recyclers and research institutes to help find solutions to the growing issue of e-waste. If passed, the bill will create competitive research grants for reducing the environmental impact of discarded electronic devices, and promote the recycling of these devices through R&D projects.
Best Buy actively supports policies and initiatives that promote the responsible recycling of electronic waste. It also continues its active work with manufacturers, retailers, policy makers, and industry groups to help bring more environmentally-friendly technologies faster to market.
Specifically, Best Buy offers a variety of programs to help consumers recycle, reuse, or trade in technology in ways that are responsible. And consumers currently recycle more electronics and appliances through Best Buy than any other retailer nationwide: the retailer’s programs collected 83 million pounds of electronics and 73 million pounds of appliances in 2010.
On July 6, Congressman Sarbanes will visit E-Structors, one of the largest electronics recycling services in Maryland. E-Structors is one of the qualified recycling partners for Best Buy programs.
