STATEMENT: Best Buy applauds EPA National Strategy for Electronics Stewardship
-
MINNEAPOLIS, July 20 – Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE: BBY) has publicly stated support for the Obama Administration’s “National Strategy for Electronics Stewardship,” unveiled today by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The strategy endorses responsible electronic design, purchasing, management and recycling that will promote the burgeoning electronics recycling market and jobs of the future in the United States.
“The responsible management of electronics provides an opportunity to create economic development and jobs by developing a strong domestic electronics recycling market while preventing pollution at home and abroad,” according to the EPA announcement earlier today.
Best Buy offers a variety of programs to help consumers recycle, reuse, or trade in technology in ways that are responsible, with a goal to collect one billion pounds of technology by the end of 2014. Consumers currently recycle more technology through Best Buy than any other retailer nationwide: its programs collected 83 million pounds of electronics and 73 million pounds of appliances in 2010.
And Best Buy works only with certified third-party electronics recyclers, all of which carry either R2 or eStewards certification, which handle the recycling of electronics collected nationwide at Best Buy stores. Learn more about recycling certification standards here: http://www.epa.gov/osw/conserve/materials/ecycling/certification.htm
Additionally, Best Buy actively supports policies and initiatives that promote the responsible recycling of electronic waste. It also continues its active work with manufacturers, retailers, policy makers, and industry groups to help bring more environmentally-friendly technologies faster to market.
